Lifebuoy & Life jacket (SOLAS & Carriage Requirement)


               
               
       
  SOLAS Requirement 


         Lifebuoy


General requirements:


• outer diameter not more than 800mm & inner diameter not less than 400mm. 
• constructed by inherent buoyant material. 
• capable of supporting 14.5 kg of iron in fresh water for a period of 24 hours. 
• have mass of not less than 2.5 KG
• not sustain burning or continue melting after being totally envelope in a fire for 2 sec. 
• withstand drop into water from the height of 30m or height at stowage whichever is greater. 
• MOB buoy mass not less than 4 KG. 
• fitted with grab line not less than 9.5mm in diameter & not less than 4 times the outside diameter of the buoy in length. 
• grab line shall be secured at four equidistant point around the circumference of buoy to form four equal loops.
• readily available on both sides of the ship, 1 in vicinity of stern.
• at least 1 on each side fitted with buoyant lifeline, length not less than twice the distance from stowage position to waterline or 30m whichever is greater.
• 50% lifebuoys should be fitted with self igniting lights. 
• 2 lifebuoys with lights to have smokes and able to release from bridge.
• marked with ships name + port of registry in block roman letters.



Carriage requirement :

passenger ship                     • cargo ship

  60 - 120m   = 12                   100 - 150m  = 10
  120 - 180m = 18                   150 - 200m  = 12
  180 - 240m  = 24                  200 & above = 14
  240 & above = 36 


Lifebuoy self igniting lights :


cannot extinguish by water.
• white color, luminous intensity not less than 2cd
• burn continuously for 2 hours.
• not less than 50 flashes not more than 70 flashes per min.


Life buoy with smoke :

emit smoke of high visible color at uniform rate at least 15 min when floating in calm water 
• not ignite explosively or emit any flame during emission.
• not be swamped in seaway.
• continue to emit smoke, when submerged in water at least 10 sec.

• buoyant lifeline - min diameter 8mm, min breaking strength 5kn, non- kinking. 



                           Life jacket 


General requirements :


• shall not sustain burning or continue melting after being totally enveloped in fire for 2sec.
• before demonstration 75% of persons can don within 1 min without assistance. after demonstration all persons can don within period of 1 min without assistance. 
• it is comfortable to wear.
• allows the wearer to jump from a height of at least 4.5metres into water without dislodging or damaging the lifejacket. 
• it is able to lift mouth of unconscious person not less than 120mm clear of the water with the body inclined backwards at angle not less than 20 deg from vertical position.
• turn the body of the person from any position to one where the mouth is clear of the water in not more than 5 sec.
• child life jacket must mark with child symbol adopted by the organisation.
• buoyancy shall not reduced by more than 5% after 24 hours submersion in freshwater.
• each life jacket shall be fitted with whistle firmly secured by a cord.
• lifejacket which depends on inflation, for buoyancy shall have not less than 2 separate compartments.
• each lifejacket light shall have a luminous intensity not less than  0.75 cd, white color for at least 8 hours.
• not less than 50 flashes and not more than 70 flashes per min.

Carriage requirement 


100% for persons onboard
• 10% of passengers, child lifejacket onboard or the no of children onboard.
• 2.5% of total passengers, infant lifejackets onboard. ( less than 3 years or 5 KG ).
