SOLAS Requirements ( Anti exposure suits, Thermal protective aids, Pyrotechnics)

             
                  
  SOLAS Requirement 


Anti-exposure suits :


• constructed with waterproof material.
• provides inherent buoyancy of at least 70N.
• not sustain burning or continue melting after being totally envelope in fire for 2 secs
• should be donned without assistance within 2 mins.
• equipped with a pocket for portable VHF.
• has lateral field of vision of at least 120deg.
• permit the person to climb up & down a vertical ladder at least 5 m in length.
• allows wearer to jump from a height of at least 4.5 meters into water.
• swim short distance at least 25 meters & board a survival craft. 
• don life jacket without assistance. 
• perform all duties associated with abandonment. 
• made of material which has no inherent insulation, marked with instructions that it must be worn in conjunction with warm clothing.
• when worn for a period of 1 hour in calm water at a temp of 5 deg c,  body temperature does not fall more than 1.5 deg c per hour after 0.5 hrs.
• allow to turn face down to face up position not more than 5 sec. 
• carriage requirement one for every crew.



Thermal Protective aids


made of water proof material having thermal conductance of not more than 7800 w.
• shall cover the whole body of persons of all sizes wearing a lifejacket with the exception of the face.
• capable of being unpacked & easily donned without assistance in a survival craft or rescue boat.
• permit the wearer to remove it in water in not more than 2 mins.
• thermal protective aid shall function properly throughout an air temperature range - 30deg c to +20deg c. 
• carriage requirement one for every crew ( stowed in remote station & lifeboat )


 Remote parachute flare


contained in a water resistant casing.
• operational instructions on casing.
• integral means of ignition.
• when fired vertically reach an altitude of not less than 300 m
• burn with bright red color.
• luminous intensity of not less than 30, 000cd.
• burning period of not less than 40 sec 
• have rate of descent of not less than 5 m/s
• not damage its parachute or attachments while burning.



Hand flares


contained in a water resistant casing. 
• operational instructions on casing.
• integral means of ignition.
• burn with bright red color.
• luminous intensity of 1500cd.
• burning period of not less than 1 min.
• continue to burn after been immersed for a period of 10 sec under 100mm of water.


Buoyant Smoke Signal


contained in a water resistant casing.
• operational instructions on casing. 
• emit smoke of highly visible color at a uniform rate for a period of not less than 3 mins.
• not emit any flame during the entire emission time.
• not be swamped in seaway. 
• continue to emit smoke when submerged in water for a period of 10 sec under 100mm of water.
