Maintenance of Lifeboat (complete explanation)

             
 Maintenance of lifeboat :


There are 6 different types of maintenance to be done onboard. 

 
1. Weekly
2. Monthly
3. Quarterly 
4. Six monthly
5. Annually
6. Five yearly


    1. Weekly

• visual check, check falls, check inside condition.
• move out from stowed position.
• run engine for 3 mins.
• In passenger ship emergency lighting to be tested every week.
• emergency alarm to be tested.


    2. Monthly 

• move out from stowed position, lower lifeboat.
• check all lifeboat equipment as per shipboard
   list & check expiry dates.
• check falls, sheaves, lighting, engine & rudder movement.
• test emergency lighting on cargo ship.
• report of inspection shall be entered in logbook.


    3. Quarterly 


• lower lifeboat & manoeuvre in water.
• in freefall lifeboats, every 3 months perform all  abandon ship duties and all crew sit in the 
  lifeboat & explain release, but don't actually release.
• all crew move out and boat to be launched either freefall or by secondary launching appliance with    or without operating crew.
• lifeboat to be manoeuvred in water.


    4. Six monthly 


• freefall lifeboat to be freefall launched by operating crew.


      5. Annually 


• by the manufacturer or administration approved organisation ( class surveyor ).
• onload release mechanism to be operationally tested.
• launching appliances & winch brake at full lowering speed at 1.1 times it's max load.


     6. Five yearly 


• by the manufacturer or administration approved organisation ( class surveyor ).
• onload release mechanism to be tested to 1.1times the load after every overhaul.
• overhaul to be done every 5 years.
• launching appliance & winch brake at full lowering speed at 1.1 times it's max load.
